Natalie lent back in her chair and read through her book, not being a pilot she didn't need to take care of any machines or go on mission briefings. Leaving her some time to kick back once in a while.

Victor entered the room and found Natalie lying in a chair. "Hey there, got an idea for new tech. I initially designed it to help crippled civilians but this may help pilots to. Problem is I'll need your help." He said as he pulled his laptop out of his bag and put it on the table, opening a file containing the basics of his design.

Natalie looked over the technical specifications on Victors laptop.
"This could work, can you build something like this? Also, we'd need a guinea pig to try it on." Natalie pulled up schematics of pre-existing non-powered braces. "I mean all we need really is to make it do is amplify a user's strength."

"It'll be more than that, this is also supposed to incorporate a shock absorbing system in case you fall. Overall I hope for this to function similar to the leg of a mobile suit. And as for a tester, I'm your guy. We can't use Valen for this because right now it's for civilian use. Besides, he's locked himself up in the bunker for some reason."

Natalie sighed, this was going to be an interesting build.
"Alright, we need the brace to be able to recognise and mimic a user's actions so it can amplify them. As it's a hinge joint all we need it a rotation sensor built into the part around knee here." she pointed at the diagram. "Some form of miniaturised motors too. That covers half of it, jumping and landing, now that's a tricky one."
She paced up and down the lab, thinking. "When we jump it's because the kinetic energy the muscles release propel us up. It's the same in Mobile Suits. With those braces we have up covered, landing on the other hand is harder. We need some way of absorbing the recoil of coming down from such a height."

Victor cupped his chin as he always did when in thought. We could employ springs to redirect or absorb a portion of the kinetic energy. The rest would be absorbed by the legs as normal. What energy was absorbed by the springs could be stored until needed, when the person is jumping, allowing extra height and build up with each jump. Not exactly a perfect fix but it's better than nothing."

Natalie nodded, she could remember at least some physics, for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction. Energy from the fall could be "stored", like Victor suggested.
"Some kind of suspension system, that sounds doable. Can you build it? We're talking microcircuitry, but programming it shouldn't be too hard."

Victor reached in and pulled out a rough metal frame shaped like a leg from his bag. "This is as far as I got. I wanted to be sure this was do-able before I made the actual thing." He placed it on the table next to the laptop. "It lacks the circuitry right now as you can see. This "prototype" was molded from my leg and I can tell you it is not very comfortable."

"I'm afraid I can't help you with the circuitry. But I'll help make sure we keep it moulded to your leg after you've modified it and help program it. Also, might I suggest some sort of control mechanism? Perhaps something wireless so that people can alter the strength levels?"

"I considered a psycommu interface but right now it's to experimental to work. Instead we're gonna have to use either a wrist interface or simply use a dial."

"My thoughts exactly, I'll get to work on programming it while you work on the circuitry. Got a spare wrist interface we can upload it to?"

Victor chuckled. "Not on me at the moment. I can handle the programming. I'd be glad if you could be on watch in case anything goes wrong during testing."

Natalie grabbed a first aid kit from next to her desk.
"Rather you than me Victor. Give me a shout when you're ready."

It was an hour later that Victor had pieced together to prototype leg braces. Returning to Natalie's place he walked to the center of the room and slid the machine over his legs. "Well, here goes nothing. Testing Phase 1, walking. Doctor on standby as needed." He said into a small handheld recorder and nodding to Natalie.
Hesitantly he took his first steps in the braces. The mechanisms in the braces seemed to be a little slow as he had to carry their full weight on top of his own for about a second before they kicked in. "Motors a little slow." He said.

Natalie looked at the laptop.
"I'll increase the reaction time of the motors."
She made a small edit to the program.
"Try now."
